Alta Ski Area is one of the oldest ski resorts in the country, the first ski lift opened in 1939. It’s located very close to the Salt Lake City metropolitan area, in the Wasatch Mountains next door to the Snowbird Ski Resort. “Vertical gain” at Alta, from the base to the highest point, is a little over 2,000 feet. They have over 2,000 acres of skiable space – sorry, no snowboarders.

Location
Alta Ski Area is in the Wasatch Mountains, only 10 miles east of Sandy and the greater Salt Lake City metro area. Snowbird resort is located adjacent to the west. Solitude Mountain and Brighton Resort are only a couple miles to the east, but getting there requires an hour-long drive west to Sandy and then back east via another Wasatch valley.
Alta is directly connected to the Salt Lake City by State Route 210. It’s a 13 mile drive to Sandy and 30 miles to downtown SLC.
Salt Lake City International Airport is on the northwest side of the region, about an hour from Alta.
